At the age of 12, Reuben Kadish was inspired to be an artist by the paintings of Courbet in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. He carried a sketchbook everywhere, making drawings of people and places. At the same time, he befriended Lorser Feitelson, a local painter, where he learned to study classical art and the new style of surrealism.
