Reuben was born in Chicago. The family moved to Los Angeles. He was inspired by Courbet. He painted murals with Phil Guston. WWII changed his style. He taught in New York and sculpted for 30 years.

He studied in art schools in Los Angeles. There he met lifelong friends. Courbet influence.
