Upon arriving in New York, Reuben bought a dairy farm in rural New Jersey. For ten years (1945-55) he was a successful dairy farmer. He raised cows. He grew feed for his dairy herd. He worked the soil. This greatly influenced his eventual return to making artwork. His sculptures were made of clay. Some were fired into terra cotta. Some were transformed into bronze. Two major themes of his later years involved a series of earth mothers derived from sculpture he saw in India and a series of heads inspired by the horrors of the Holocaust.
