In 1942, Reuben was invited to serve his country as a correspondent of the US Army artist unit in WWII. He was sent to India and Burma where he observed horrific scenes of death and startvation of civilians and animals. His 1943 paintings and drawings capture the poignant moments suffered by physical pain and emotional torture. The horrible scenes he portrayed drastically influenced his style of art. His artwork evolved into expressionism. Jagged lines, more textured, harsh contrasts.
