Style transition

Reuben’s style was changed dramatically by what he saw during WWII. Before 1943 he painted and drew in a reprentational syle of classic and surreal figures. After he returned from the war he turned to expressionism in graphics and sculpture. Jagged line and rough texture replaced clean lines and smooth surfaces. Many of his figures were mythological animal forms. Reuben was influenced by figures brought back by his wife’s passion for anthropology. Barbara went on many digs in the middle east.
